DEF TANK APPLICATIONS

Who Needs a DEF Tank?

Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF), including AdBlue® is now standard in diesel-powered fleets across Australia, but not all storage solutions are equal.

The right setup depends on how much you dispense, how fast you need access, and whether you are running a fixed depot, a retail forecourt, or a mixed agricultural operation.

Here is where each Polymaster configuration fits.

  • Fleet Depots and Transport Operators: Self-bunded dispensing stations from 2,300L to 10,000L with 12V or 240V submersible pumps built for high-volume, fixed-site dispensing.
  • Fuel Retailers and Forecourt Operations: Terminal configuration units designed for public-access dispensing. The preferred choice of major national fuel retailers across Australia and New Zealand.
  • Agricultural and Rural Operations: Slimline tanks from 2,000L to 5,000L for sheds, workshops, and machinery yards, low-footprint, connect to existing pump infrastructure.
  • Operators with Existing Infrastructure: Single-skin round tanks (2,000L and 4,000L) with stainless-steel fittings and AdBlue® dry-break, designed to integrate with your current pump setup.

WHY CHOOSE A PURPOSE-BUILT DEF TANK FOR ADBLUE

Why AdBlue® Storage Requires a Purpose-Built DEF Tank

Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF), including AdBlue® is not a forgiving substance to store. It is a highly purified solution of demineralised water and urea (32.5%) that is classified as corrosive to materials not listed as AdBlue®-proof in ISO 22241. Left exposed to air, it crystallises. Stored in non-compliant vessels, it degrades in performance. Exposed to direct sunlight or extreme heat, its chemical composition becomes compromised. Stored too cold, it freezes.

These properties make it critical that AdBlue® be stored in vessels built to exacting standards, rather than in repurposed water tanks or standard poly containers. Every Polymaster DEF tank is suitable for storage of Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF), including AdBlue® and engineered specifically to protect the fluid from UV exposure, temperature extremes, and atmospheric contamination.

Polymaster has been handling solutions for AdBlue® from the day it was introduced into Australia in 2014. That track record has led major national fuel retailers to use Polymaster exclusively to store and dispense AdBlue® at their retail sites throughout Australia and New Zealand.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Polymaster’s DEF tank range for AdBlue® bulk storage, from product selection and chemical compatibility through to delivery and maintenance.

AdBlue® is a corrosive substance that will degrade materials not specified as AdBlue®-proof under ISO 22241. It crystallises when exposed to the atmosphere, leaks through any small opening, and breaks down in performance when exposed to direct sunlight, extreme heat, or cold temperatures. Standard poly tanks and diesel containers are not compatible with AdBlue® and must never be used to store it. Purpose-built Def tanks for AdBlue® use AdBlue®-rated polyethylene, stainless-steel fittings, and sealed breather systems to protect the fluid and your equipment.
Polymaster tanks manufactured from polyethylene (PE) have excellent chemical resistance across a broad range of substances, including diesel, AdBlue®, liquid fertiliser, and many more. There are over 1,935 chemicals that can be stored within a Polymaster tank. Specific consultation on chemical suitability and compliance can be provided by our technical engineering team, contact us to discuss your requirements.
The Depot configuration is designed for fleet and workshop environments where AdBlue® is dispensed into vehicles by operators, typically with a pump and hose reel setup. The Terminal configuration is designed for public-access retail forecourt dispensing, with a different dispensing interface suited to self-serve or attended fuel retail environments. Both are available across the full capacity range from 2,300L to 10,000L. Contact our team if you are unsure which configuration suits your operation.

The right capacity depends on your daily or weekly AdBlue® consumption and how frequently you can take a tanker delivery. As a general guide: small fleets consuming up to 200L per week are well served by a 2,300L station, which gives approximately 10 fills from a standard tanker. Larger fleets or high-throughput operations should look at 5,000L to 10,000L units to reduce delivery frequency and avoid running dry. Contact our team for a more precise sizing recommendation based on your fleet size and consumption data.

Def tanks for AdBlue® require periodic inspection and cleaning to prevent crystallisation build-up in fittings and pipework. Check and clean the infill strainer and outlet fittings regularly, particularly if the tank has been sitting unused. Keep the breather clear and ensure the dry-break coupling seats cleanly at each fill. If the tank has been contaminated with diesel or another substance, flush thoroughly before reusing, contaminated AdBlue® will damage SCR systems. Follow Polymaster’s maintenance guidance and consult our technical team if you are unsure.
