Choosing Between Round, Slimline and Underground
WHICH TANK TYPE DO YOU NEED?
Round Tanks
The most cost-effective option per litre and the simplest to install. Round tanks need open space, which makes them the natural choice for rural blocks, larger yards and anywhere the tank sits out of sight behind a shed. The low profile models at 2,270L and 4,500L drop the overall height considerably, which helps where the tank has to sit under a verandah or below a window line. Round tanks are available in both corrugated and smooth wall profiles.

Slimline Tanks
Built for sites where a round tank simply will not fit. From 580mm wide, slimline tanks slot into narrow side passages, along boundary fences and against courtyard walls. They cost more per litre than round tanks, but on a suburban block they are often the only option that works. Slimline tanks are also the choice where the tank will be visible from the street, since the flat profile sits neatly against a wall.

Underground Tanks
The tank disappears entirely. Underground storage frees up the whole surface area of the block, which matters on small lots where every square metre of yard counts. The low profile 1,665mm height keeps excavation shallow. Underground tanks cost more to install because of the excavation, so they suit projects where the space above ground is worth more than the installation saving.

Where Can You Use a Small Water Tank?
A small tank does not mean a small job. These are the situations where a tank under 5,000L is the right call.
Gardens and Courtyards
The most common use. A tank in the 600L to 2,000L range holds enough to keep pots, raised beds and a small lawn watered through a dry spell without running the mains. Add a garden pump and you have pressure at the hose without a second thought.
New Builds and Council Requirements
Many councils now require rainwater storage on new homes and renovations. Requirements vary by state. Victoria typically requires 2,000L connected to toilet flush, Queensland mandates 5,000L for houses and 3,000L for townhouses, and NSW BASIX targets are usually met with 3,000L to 5,000L. Check with your plumber or building surveyor for your block.
Narrow Side Passages and Boundary Fences
Where the only available space is the strip between the house and the fence. Slimline tanks from 580mm wide turn that strip into useful storage. Check your local council rules on how close a tank can sit to a boundary before you order.
Household Supply for Toilets and Laundry
With a household pump and an automatic rain to mains changeover, a small tank can supply toilets and the washing machine, switching back to town water when the tank runs dry. This is where the 2,000L to 5,000L end of the range earns its keep.
Small Commercial and Site Use
Compact storage for washdown water, dust suppression, plant watering and site amenities. A 1,000L or 2,000L round tank is easy to position, easy to move and easy to replace.

Do You Need a Pump With Your Tank?
A tank on its own gives you gravity-fed water at the outlet. That is enough for filling buckets, watering by hand or feeding a trough downhill. For anything that needs pressure, you need a pump. Polymaster supplies matched pump packages so the tank and pump arrive together, ready to connect.
Tank Only
No pump. Suits gravity-fed applications, trough top-up, or sites where a pump is already installed. Also the right choice if you plan to have a plumber specify the pump separately.

Garden Pump System (GPS)
A garden pump with press control and a colour-matched pump cover. Designed for irrigation, hoses and outdoor watering where mains backup is not required. Available on slimline tanks from 1,050L to 5,000L and on underground tanks in both capacities.

The 2,020L Builder Tank arrives with the pump already installed, flexible hoses fitted, and outlets and overflows at both ends. Hook-up takes around ten minutes, and the tank fits through a standard doorway. Single storey uses a 370W pump, double storey a 550W pump. What Size Small Water Tank Do You Need?
Start with what the water is for, then check the space you have. These are useful rules of thumb.
Courtyard Pots and Herbs
Around 600L to 1,050L is enough to keep small planters and pots going between rain. A slimline tank at this capacity fits against a wall without taking usable space.
Compact Vegetable Patch, Up to 50 Square Metres
Step up to 2,000L or 3,000L for reliable irrigation through a dry stretch. Add a garden pump if you want pressure at the hose.
Family Lawn and Mixed Garden Beds, 100 Square Metres or More
Look at 5,000L. At this capacity you have a genuine buffer rather than a top-up, and round tanks become more cost-effective per litre if you have the space for one.
Household Use Including Toilets and Laundry
3,000L to 5,000L with a household pump and automatic changeover. Below 3,000L the tank empties too quickly to carry a household through a dry period, and the system spends most of its time on mains water.
For a precise figure, multiply your available roof catchment area in square metres by your postcode’s average annual rainfall in millimetres, then divide by how many times you expect to empty and refill the tank each year.

Preparing Your Site
Truck and trailer clearance required is 19 metres long, 5 metres high and 3.5 metres wide. Check for low branches or powerlines on your access route, and make sure your gate and entrance can accommodate a 19 metre truck and trailer. A flat, clear area of at least 5 metres by 5 metres is required for unloading. Our logistics team will contact you approximately seven days before delivery to confirm your address and access requirements.

What counts as a small water tank?
At Polymaster, small covers everything from 200L up to 5,000L. That includes round, slimline and underground tanks. Above 5,000L you are into our medium range, which runs from 7,000L to 13,600L.
What is the smallest water tank Polymaster makes?
The 200L round corrugated tank (RWT200) is the smallest in the range at 600mm diameter and 900mm high. It suits courtyards, balconies and shed roofs where the catchment is limited.
Do I need a pump with a small water tank?
Only if you need pressure. Without a pump you get gravity-fed flow at the outlet, which is fine for filling buckets, hand watering or feeding something downhill. For a hose with decent pressure, an irrigation system, or household use such as toilets and laundry, you need a pump. Polymaster supplies matched garden pump and household pump packages so everything arrives together.
What is the difference between the AP and GPS pump packages?
The GPS package is a garden pump with press control, built for irrigation and outdoor watering. The AP package is a submersible pump with an automatic rain to mains changeover, which is what you need when the system has to switch to town water once the tank runs dry. AP is the choice for household use. GPS is the choice for the garden.
Can I fit a water tank in a narrow side passage?
Yes. Polymaster slimline tanks start at 580mm wide, which fits most side passages and boundary strips. Measure the narrowest point of your access route as well as the space itself, since the tank has to get there. Check your council rules on how close a tank can sit to a boundary before ordering.
How long do Polymaster small water tanks last?
Polymaster tanks are built to a 25 year design life, and warranty periods vary by range. Premium corrugated round tanks (RWT) carry a 20 year warranty. Smooth wall round tanks (PCR) carry 15 years. Underground tanks and Builder Tanks carry 10 years, and slimline tanks carry 7 years. Pumps supplied with GPS and AP packages carry a 2 year warranty.
Can I link multiple small tanks together?
Yes. Polymaster tanks include a tank to tank connection point, so multiple tanks can be linked to increase total capacity without a larger footprint. This is a common solution along a long fence line, or where you need more than 5,000L but cannot fit a single larger tank.
What size water tank do I need for my garden?

Yes. Standard tanks come with one outlet, one ball valve and one inlet. Additional fittings and upgraded fittings are available at extra cost. Outlets and ball valves range from 25mm to 100mm. Outlet position can also be moved from the standard position to suit your site.
Will an underground tank float in wet ground?
Polymaster underground tanks use a self-anchoring ribbed design that resists hydraulic uplift when correctly backfilled with granular material. The low profile 1,665mm height also reduces flotation risk compared with taller designs. Poly tanks may fall outside AS/NZS 4766 certification if buried more than one metre deep, so refer to the installation guide for deeper applications.
How is my tank delivered and what do I need to prepare?
Tanks are delivered on Polymaster’s own fleet. Truck and trailer clearance required is 19 metres long, 5 metres high and 3.5 metres wide, and you will need a flat, clear area of at least 5 metres by 5 metres for unloading. Our logistics team contacts you approximately seven days before delivery. For 5,000L models, suitable lifting equipment such as a forklift is required on site.
