HOW POLY PUMP WELLS WORK
What Is a Pump Well?
A pump well is an underground polyethylene vessel that holds black water or grey water so it can be pumped to a higher location or transferred to another area for disposal. They are used in domestic and commercial wastewater systems where gravity alone is not sufficient to move the water to its required discharge point – for example, where a building or facility sits below the level of the sewer main, or where the terrain requires the wastewater to be lifted before it can flow away naturally.
Polymaster pump wells are rotationally moulded from tough polyethylene, giving them the structural strength to withstand underground installation while remaining lightweight and easy to handle on site. Each unit comes with an accessible poly lid that provides a service point for the pump of your choice, and accepts 100mm PVC pipe connection via a rubber ring seal at variable height connection points – giving you flexibility in how the unit is plumbed to suit your site.

Compatible Accessories
The Polymaster riser extension and lid range is fully compatible with the pump well range, allowing you to extend access height for deeper installations or upgrade to a square lid where required.
PUMP WELL APPLICATIONS
Where Are Poly Pump Wells Used?
Polymaster pump wells are used wherever black water or grey water needs to be collected and pumped to a higher point or transferred to a disposal area. Common applications include:
Domestic Wastewater Systems
In residential properties where the building sits below the level of the sewer main or where the terrain prevents gravity drainage, a pump well collects wastewater from the property and pumps it up to the discharge point. This is a common requirement in new residential developments on sloping or low-lying sites.
Commercial and Industrial Sites
Commercial buildings, industrial facilities, and multi-tenancy developments often require pump wells as part of their wastewater management system – particularly in basement or below-ground areas where gravity drainage to the sewer is not possible.
Septic and On-Site Treatment Systems
Pump wells are used in conjunction with septic tanks and on-site wastewater treatment systems to move treated or partially treated effluent to a disposal area such as a leach drain, irrigation field, or absorption trench where the receiving area is at a higher elevation than the tank.

FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about Polymaster poly pump wells, from sizing and installation through to accessories and compliance.
What is a poly pump well used for?
A poly pump well is an underground vessel that collects black water or grey water so it can be pumped to a higher location or transferred to a disposal area. They are used in wastewater systems where gravity drainage is not possible – for example, where a property sits below the level of the sewer main, or where treated effluent needs to be pumped to a disposal field at a higher elevation.
What sizes do Polymaster pump wells come in?
Polymaster pump wells are available in three capacities – 700L, 1,000L, and 1,300L. All three share the same one-piece roto-moulded polyethylene construction and are compatible with the Polymaster riser extension and lid accessories.
What standard are Polymaster pump wells designed to meet?
Polymaster pump wells are designed to meet AS/NZS 1546.1, which is the Australian and New Zealand standard for on-site domestic wastewater management systems – specifically, the requirements for collection wells and pump chambers.
What pump goes inside a Polymaster pump well?
Polymaster pump wells are designed to accept the pump of your choice. The accessible poly lid provides a service point for pump installation and maintenance, and the unit comes with a rubber ring seal fitting for 100mm PVC pipe connection at variable height connection points to suit your preferred pump outlet configuration. Consult a licensed plumber to select the appropriate pump for your application and flow requirements.
Can I extend the height of a Polymaster pump well?
Yes. An optional riser extension is available, measuring 555mm wide by 530mm high, which can be added to increase the access height of the pump well for deeper underground installations. Square lids are also available as an optional upgrade – contact your local Polymaster distributor for pricing.
What pipe size connects to a Polymaster pump well?
100mm PVC pipe can be connected to the pump well using the rubber ring seal fitting at any of the variable height connection points. This gives you flexibility to match the pipe connection to the depth and layout requirements of your specific installation.
Do I need lifting equipment to install a Polymaster pump well?
Polymaster pump wells are manufactured to be lightweight and easy to handle on-site. However, for larger capacity units and deeper installations, lifting equipment may be required. We recommend confirming site access and handling requirements with your installer before delivery. For delivery of the 1,000L unit, note that lifting gear on site is required.
Where can I find installation drawings for Polymaster pump wells?
Downloadable installation drawings are available for all three sizes – 700L, 1,000L, and 1,300L – from the Polymaster downloads section. The Septic Tank and Pump Wells Category Brochure is also available for download and covers the full range of compatible accessories.
