Home Chemical & Industrial Chemical Storage Tanks Industrial Process Water Tanks
Industrial Process Water Tanks
Process water is not rainwater. Cooling loops, wash-down bays, boiler feed, wastewater balance, fire reserves and dosing systems all place demands on a tank that a domestic rainwater tank was never built for.
Polymaster industrial process water tanks are engineered chemical tanks, Australian-made, certified to AS/NZS 4766:2020, and built for a 25-year design life. Available from 200L to 50,000L in smooth and corrugated wall profiles, with specific gravities up to 2.0 (up to 1.5 SG on the 50,000L).
INDUSTRIAL PROCESS WATER APPLICATIONS
Where Industrial Process Water Tanks Are Used
Process water tanks sit at the heart of dozens of industrial workflows – anywhere fresh, treated, recycled, or dosed water needs to be held, buffered, or moved through a system. Polymaster tanks are specified across five core industries.
Mining and Resources
Dust suppression, ore processing, wash-down water, and site potable and non-potable storage – from remote WA iron ore operations to Queensland coal sites. Polymaster tanks are engineered for site logistics, tie-downs, and high-SG process liquors.
Water Utilities and Treatment
Balance tanks, dosing tanks, treated water reservoirs, backwash storage, and pump-station buffer tanks. AS/NZS 4020 food-grade compliance makes Polymaster suitable for drinking water contact where required.
Chemical Manufacturers
Process water for reactor cooling, dilution, rinsing, and effluent balance. Chemical resistance is a core design brief – see the compatibility list below and the downloadable Chemical Compatibility Chart.
Food and Beverage
Ingredient water, CIP (clean-in-place) storage, wash-down, and boiler feed. Food-grade PE plus AS/NZS 4020 certification meets contact-with-drinking-water requirements.
Transport and Petrochemical
Bulk site process water, wash-bay recycling, and produced-water balance at terminals and fuel depots. Corrosion resistance and 25-year design life outperform steel equivalents in most site conditions.

Engineered, Compliant, and Built to Australian Standards
Every Polymaster industrial process water tank is designed under a formal engineering process – including FEA (Finite Element Analysis) – and manufactured to AS/NZS 4766:2020. That is not a marketing badge: it is the same certification framework used across water utilities, mining and processing sites, and F&B plants where documented compliance is non-negotiable.
Our team also understands the paperwork side – from GA drawings and lifting plans through to compliance documentation and OHS-approved installation guidance. If your project requires specifier support, we can provide it before you place the order.
Customised Liquid Storage Solutions
Not every industrial process tank is a standard-off-the-shelf order. Polymaster’s engineering team works directly with specifiers on custom configurations – bunding, sealed lids, non-standard fittings, oversized process connections (up to 600NB), and multi-tank interconnected systems. Whether you need a single 600L reactor buffer or a 50,000L balance tank on a treatment plant, we can spec, engineer and manufacture to suit.

INSTALLATION AND SITE SET-UP
Installing Your Industrial Process Water Tank
Process water tanks require correct site preparation, connection, and commissioning to perform to their 25-year design life. The steps below summarise the key stages from the Polymaster Chemical Tanks Installation, Operation & Maintenance Manual. Read the full manual and the PST & CSW Lifting Plan before commencing installation.
1. Selecting a Safe Location
Process water tanks are designed for above-ground use only and cannot be buried under any circumstances. When selecting a location, consider excessive wind or seismic forces, flooding risk, and safe access for regular operation, maintenance, and future replacement. Confirm delivery truck and crane access before dispatch. Check with local, state, and national authorities to confirm all regulatory requirements are met.
2. Base and Foundation Requirements
The tank must be installed on a solid, level, non-combustible base. The recommended foundation is a minimum 45mm thick concrete or bitumen plinth extending 300mm on all sides of the tank. Where a non-concrete base is used, the alternative is compacted material with a maximum 5mm particle size (e.g. crusher dust), engineered by the customer for local conditions. Hold-down lugs, where specified, are for tank positioning only – they are not designed to withstand high wind or seismic forces. M12 nuts must be positioned centrally in the 20mm lug hole and must not be tightened, to allow for tank expansion and contraction.
3. Handling, Transport, and Lifting
Do not transport a tank with liquid inside. Never push, pull, drag, or roll the tank. Loading and off-loading must be carried out with a forklift with extended forks or equivalent professional equipment. Do not lift the tank by covers, sockets, or protruding elements that are not designed for lifting. Do not stand or work on top of the tank at any time – the surface is slippery and flexible and could result in serious injury. Follow the PST & CSW Lifting Plan for the specific SKU before any lifting operation.
4. Fittings, Venting, and Flexible Connections
All fittings, including outlets and inlets, must have flexible joint connections between the tank and the plumbing or rigid pipework. This is a warranty-critical requirement – the Polymaster warranty is only valid if appropriate flexible connections are installed. Flexible connections absorb movement, isolate pump vibration, accommodate pipe misalignment, and minimise surge pressures. All hoses, piping, and valves must be independently supported and shielded from impact. Tanks cannot be pressurised and are designed to operate at atmospheric pressure – the vent size must always exceed the size of the largest fill or discharge to prevent pressure or vacuum developing. Custom process connections up to 600NB can be specified – talk to the Polymaster engineering team at quote stage.
5. Commissioning, Filling, and Inspection
Hydro test the tank with potable water for 24 to 48 hours before introducing process fluid. Confirm compatibility of the tank, fittings, and gaskets with the fluid to be stored. Label the tank with the appropriate warning label where applicable. Fill only under the supervision of an authorised person, and do not exceed a fill rate of 250 litres per minute – exceeding this rate will void the warranty. Contents should be used within 12 months. Inspect the tank internally and externally every 6 months, or every 50,000 litres dispensed, whichever occurs first.

FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an industrial process water tank?
An industrial process water tank is an engineered storage vessel built to hold water that plays an active role in an industrial process – cooling, dosing, wash-down, boiler feed, wastewater balance, or fire reserve. It is not a rainwater tank. Polymaster process water tanks are certified to AS/NZS 4766:2020 and engineered for a 25-year design life.
How does a process water tank differ from a rainwater tank?
Rainwater tanks are designed to hold captured roof runoff at atmospheric pressure with minimal chemical load. Process water tanks are engineered chemical tanks – higher-specification resin, FEA-designed for a specified specific gravity (up to 2.0), and certified for chemical and process contact. The wall thickness, resin grade, fittings, and compliance certifications are all different.
What size process water tank do I need?
Sizing depends on your process flow rate, buffer time, and any regulatory or fire-reserve requirements. Polymaster’s range runs from 200L to 50,000L, and tanks can be interconnected for higher capacity. Our engineering team can help you spec the right size – call 1800 062 064.
Are Polymaster tanks chemical resistant?
Yes. Polymaster process water tanks are built from high-density polyethylene and are compatible with a broad range of industrial chemicals including sulfuric acid, sodium hypochlorite, ferric chloride, and sodium hydroxide. For chemicals outside our published list, download the Chemical Compatibility Chart or contact our team.
Which industries use Polymaster process water tanks?
Mining, water utilities, chemical manufacturing, food and beverage, transport, and petrochemical are the primary sectors. Applications range from dust suppression on mine sites to CIP water at dairies and boiler feed at treatment plants.
Can process water tanks be used for potable (drinking) water?
Yes – Polymaster polyethylene is certified to AS/NZS 4020:2018, the Australian standard for products used in contact with drinking water. Confirm the resin grade with our team when specifying for potable applications.
What specific gravities (SG) can the tanks handle?
Standard tanks are rated to SG 1.0 (water). Higher-SG variants are available: 1.5, 1.75, and 2.0 across most sizes. The 50,000L tank is rated to a maximum of SG 1.5. Specify your SG requirement when requesting a quote – it drives resin selection and wall thickness.
Do you provide engineering drawings and compliance documentation?
Yes. Our engineering team provides GA drawings, lifting plans, chemical compatibility statements, and AS/NZS 4766:2020 certification documentation for every tank. This is standard, not on request.
