MATERIALS AND RATINGS
Choosing the Right Material and SG Rating
Every tank in the Polymaster single walled chemical process range is engineered from a specific polyethylene resin grade to match the chemical being stored, its specific gravity, and the operating environment. Here is how the material grades and SG ratings work.
Hexathene Chem - Standard Grade
The default material across the range. Chemically resistant to over 1,900 chemicals, UV stabilised, and food-grade certified to AS/NZS 4020. Suitable for most acids, alkalis, and general industrial chemicals up to the tank’s rated SG.
Hexathene Chem-Plus - Extended Chemical Resistance
An alternative resin grade available on selected sizes across the range. Chem-Plus is specified during the quote process for applications requiring extended chemical exposure or elevated SG service. Sealed configurations are available on smooth wall (CSW) tanks 10,000L and above. Consult a Polymaster specialist to confirm suitability for your chemical.
SG Rating Selection
Polymaster tanks are designed for a specific gravity of 1.0 as standard. On request, this can be increased to 1.5 or 2.0 depending on the size and application. Specific Gravity (SG) is the density of the liquid relative to water. Choose the SG rating that matches or exceeds the SG of the chemical you are storing:
- 1 SG – water, dilute chemicals, and standard aqueous solutions
- 1.5 SG – moderate density chemicals including caustic soda solutions and mid-strength acids
- 1.75 SG – heavier chemicals; available on 13,500L and above
- 2 SG – heavy density chemicals including concentrated sulphuric acid, ferric chloride, and dense salt solutions
Operating temperature range across all grades: -20°C to +40°C. For elevated-temperature applications, consult a Polymaster specialist.

INSTALLATION AND SETUP
How to Install Your Polymaster Chemical Process Tank
Every Polymaster chemical process tank is engineered for straightforward on-site installation, but chemical storage carries specific compliance, safety, and warranty requirements that must be addressed at each stage. The steps below summarise the key requirements from the Polymaster Chemical Tanks Installation, Operation & Maintenance Manual. Read the full manual and the PST & CSW Lifting Plan before commencing installation.
1. Selecting a Safe Location
Tanks are designed for above-ground use only and cannot be buried under any circumstances. When selecting a location, consider excessive wind or seismic forces, flooding risk, safe distance from heat or flame sources, and bund containment requirements. Ensure the location allows safe access for regular operation, maintenance, and future replacement. Check with local, state, and national authorities to confirm all regulatory requirements are met.
Base and Foundation Requirements
The tank must be installed on a solid, level, non-combustible base. The recommended foundation is a minimum 45mm thick concrete or bitumen plinth extending 300mm on all sides of the tank. Where a non-concrete base is used, the alternative is compacted material with a maximum 5mm particle size (e.g. crusher dust), engineered by the customer for local conditions. Hold-down lugs, where specified, are for tank positioning only. They are not designed to withstand high wind or seismic forces. M12 nuts must be positioned centrally in the 20mm lug hole and must not be tightened to allow for tank expansion and contraction.
3. Handling, Transport, and Lifting
Do not transport a tank with liquid inside. Never push, pull, drag, or roll the tank. Loading and off-loading must be carried out with a forklift with extended forks or equivalent professional equipment. Do not lift the tank by covers, sockets, or protruding elements that are not designed for lifting. Do not stand or work on top of the tank at any time – the surface is slippery and flexible and could result in serious injury. Follow the PST & CSW Lifting Plan for the specific SKU before any lifting operation.
4. Fittings, Venting, and Flexible Connections
All fittings, including outlets and inlets, must have flexible joint connections between the tank and the plumbing or rigid pipework. This is a warranty-critical requirement – the Polymaster warranty is only valid if appropriate flexible connections are installed. Flexible connections absorb movement, isolate pump vibration, accommodate pipe misalignment, and minimise surge pressures. All hoses, piping, and valves must be independently supported and shielded from impact. Tanks cannot be pressurised and are designed to operate at atmospheric pressure; the vent size must always exceed the size of the largest fill or discharge to prevent pressure or vacuum developing.
5. Commissioning, Filling, and Inspection
Hydro test the tank with potable water for 24 to 48 hours before introducing any chemical. Confirm compatibility of the tank, fittings, and gaskets with the chemical to be stored using the Polymaster Chemical Compatibility Chart. Label the tank with the appropriate chemical warning label. Fill only under the supervision of an authorised person, and do not exceed a fill rate of 250 litres per minute – exceeding this rate will void the warranty. Contents should be used within 12 months. Inspect the tank internally and externally every 6 months, or every 50,000 litres dispensed, whichever occurs first.

FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about Polymaster’s single walled chemical process tanks.
Which chemicals can Polymaster tanks store?
The Polymaster range is compatible with over 1,900 chemicals, including sulphuric acid up to 98%, sodium hypochlorite, hydrochloric acid, sodium hydroxide, ferric chloride, hydrogen peroxide, and most acids, alkalis, and salts used in Australian industry. The Chemical Compatibility Chart lists the full range and recommended resin grade for each. For chemicals not listed, consult a Polymaster specialist.
Which SG rating do I need?
The SG rating must match or exceed the specific gravity of the chemical you are storing. 1SG suits water and dilute chemicals; 1.5SG covers most mid-density acids and caustics; 1.75SG is available on 13,500L and above for heavier chemicals; 2SG is engineered for concentrated sulphuric acid, ferric chloride, and dense salt solutions. If you are unsure of the SG of your chemical, provide the datasheet or product name, and Polymaster will confirm.
What is the warranty on a chemical process tank?
Every tank carries a 5-year warranty and a 25-year design life. Warranty covers manufacturing defects and structural integrity when the tank is used within its rated SG, temperature range, and chemical compatibility.
Do I need a bund with a single walled tank?
Yes. Single walled tanks require a compliant secondary containment bund. Under AS 1940, the bund must have a capacity of at least 110% of the tank’s volume, or 25% of the total capacity of all tanks within the bund, whichever is greater. For sites without existing bund infrastructure, consider the Polymaster self-bunded chemical tank range, which has integrated secondary containment.
Can I add custom fittings, outlets, or agitator ports?
Yes. Every tank can be specified with custom process connections up to 600NB – fittings, outlets, inlets, level indicators, and agitator ports. Custom configurations are engineered by the Polymaster in-house team at the quote stage.
